Welcome to the HES Library Media Center!
Tamara Boggus, Media Specialist Rhonda Stancil, Media Paraprofessional
Our mission is to provide a wide variety of media and reading materials to create students who are life-long readers and learners. Our students are excited about reading and participate in a school-wide Accelerated Reading program. We have six computer workstations for searching our online card catalog, using the Internet for research, or taking an AR reading practice quiz.
Our library depends on parent and community volunteers for assistance in all areas. Helpers are welcome at any time! Call 706-253-1840 or e-mail us from the Staff E-mail list.

Library Fund-Raising Projects
We hold Book Fairs in both fall and spring each year to supplement our book budget. We always look for volunteers to help out during the fairs. Our next Book Fair will be held September 22-26, 2008, during normal school hours. We will also be open late on Thursday (9/25) after school and through the Annual Parent meeting at 6:30 p.m. Please contact the media center if you are interested in volunteering your time. Click here to see our Book Fair webpage.
In addition to Book Fairs to raise money for the library, we also participate in a recycling program with Cartridges for Kids. We can send in used items and receive cash to buy library books. We collect the following items for recycling: empty inkjet cartridges, empty laser cartridges, used cell phones, PDAs/Palm Pilots, iPods, Laptops, digital cameras, used DVD movies, video game consoles and video games. If you are discarding any of these items, please bring them to our media center, or send them with your kids.
We are always happy to get book donations, also. We accept any children’s book and, depending on the shape it is in, will either add it to our collection or sell it to make money to buy new books.
Policies and Procedures
The library media center is open daily from 7:45 – 3:30. Students are encouraged to use the library freely. When coming to the media center on a pass, students should be very quiet and not disturb other users, or interrupt any class that is in session in the media center. Students who are not on task will be sent back to their classroom.
All classrooms visit the library as a group for 30 minutes every other week. Week A is set aside for K-2 classes, and Week B is designated for grades 3-5. During this group 30 minutes, students participate in story time, learn basic library skills, or check out library books.
The media center is open on a flexible schedule as mandated by state guidelines when no class is scheduled. Teachers may sign up their class to use the media center as needed for research, projects and library skills lessons. The media specialist and the classroom teacher work cooperatively to plan units of instruction that allow students to learn research and information skills. Students will learn how to gather information in both the media center and the computer lab for class assignments and projects.
The number of books that students are allowed to borrow is based on their grade level. All books are checked out for two weeks. Students in kindergarten may borrow one book. First and second graders may borrow 1-2 books. Third through fifth graders may borrow up to three books. Students with an overdue book of more than one month will lose all borrowing privileges until the overdue book is paid for or returned. Overdue notices are sent out to each classroom the week before report cards are to be sent home. Students are responsible for all materials that are checked out in their name until that material is returned to the library. Lost or damaged materials must be paid for by the student who borrowed them.
